Skincare Simplified

Ok so skincare can be tricky, especially when your only just starting to get serious. I went from using a quick face wipe and a slap of moisture to delving into the archives of Caroline  Hirons and getting serious on how I treat my skin.

There's the obvious stuff like drink more water, clean your makeup brushes and stay out of the sun - that was the hardest for me I've gone from a sun worshipper to factor 50 under the shade of a tree.. in the sunny state of California! :) No one wants to  look like a leather handbag in a few years so get out the fake tan ladies!

Todays post I wanted to do a run down on the right order to apply skincare products and a basic list of a typical skincare regime in the morning and at night! Obviously everyone has their own preferences but If you feeling a bit overwhelmed about all the different products and advise out there here is a quick - ish cheat sheet!

Morning Routine

  • Cleanser

So in the morning I use a light cleanser like Clarins One step Cleanser or if you're looking for a more affordable brand try Garnier Micellar water. I apply this with a cotton pad.

  • Toner

I use the same toner all the time day or night and that's the Clarins toner. For a more affordable brand I have also used the Simple toner.

  • Serum

This step is optional as some people don't bother with serums. If you are in your 20's a serum isn't completely necessary but in saying that it is a good step towards "anti ageing". I use the Origins Rose Serum. I did a review on it a few weeks ago here.  I've also used the no.7 Protect and Perfect and found that good for a more affordable option.

  • Moisturiser

So here I use a day moisturiser which at the moment is No.7 Protect and Perfect . I have also really liked Origins A Perfect World.

  • Eye Cream

Eye cream I am still kind of figuring out. It's my newest edition to my regime. I've started getting really sensitive and dry areas around my eyes so I have to be careful what I use. For me the best has been Lancome Génifique Yeux. I have also used Boots Time delay eye cream as a more affordable option.

Night Time Routine

  • Cleanser

In the evening if I have worn a lot of make up I will do a double cleanse. So for my first cleanser I use a light cleanser. This is usually the same cleanser I uses that morning. Then for my second cleanse I use a balm cleanser. My favourite has to be hands down Clinique Take the day off. I have ranted and raved about my love for this product in past posts but it really is the best in my view. A good affordable balm cleanser is the No 7 Balm cleanser.

  • Toner

Same as the morning routine.

  • Acid Toner

I always follow up my regular toner with glycolic based toner in the evening. I think this is really important to start in your 20's. It is excellent for toning, tightening and brightening your skin. Most glycolic toners are too strong for every day use and can be expensive. However Pixi Glow tonic is 5% and can be used every day and is very affordable.

  • Mask (Optional)

I don't do this step every night. It is usually evenings where I am having a particularly bad breakout. In that case I use Origins Out of Trouble. For a more affordable option try the Boots Tee Tree Clay Mask.

  • Serum

Same as the morning routine.

  • Moisturiser

I use the same as the morning routine only the night cream edition of that moisturiser. (No7 Protect and Perfect

  • Eye Cream

Same as morning routine.

  • Facial Oil

Again this is optional, some people hate oils. I on the other hand love a good face oil! Face oils are not just for dry skin they are also really good for oily skin and do not actually make the skin more oily. My favourite would have to be the Clarins face oil.  For a more affordable option try the Boots Botanical Range.
